Naveen James, PhD

I completed my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Government Engineering College Thrissur (then affiliated to University of Calicut) in the year 2006. I then obtained my master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal in 2009. Further, I received my PhD from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering in the year 2014 under the guidance of Prof. T.G Sitharam. My doctoral work was mainly focused on earthquake hazard assessment of regions at different spatial scales.

After completing the PhD, I continued working at IISc Bangalore as a post-doctoral research associate for a year. Prior to joining Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar, I was a faculty member at the Department of Civil Engineering, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Hyderabad. From 2016 onwards I am working as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Ropar. From 2019 to 2022, I also served the Institute as the Head of the Civil Engineering Department.

My broad research interests are in the areas of Soil Dynamics, Seismic Microzonation, and Landslide Hazard Analysis. At IIT Ropar, I extensively work on topics such as 1) Soil Dynamics-Liquefqaction, 2) Pore Fluid Geotechnics which focuses on understanding the static and dynamic properties of soils treated with various non-Newtonian pore fluid, 3) AI and physics-based modelling of Landslides and Slope Failure 4) Soil Structure Interaction of rocking foundation system and 5) Sustainable Geosynthetics I was also a recipient of prestigious Endeavour fellowship from Government of Australia and also served as International Research Staff at Department of Geotechnical Engineering and Geo-Sciences, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona.
